Description
Battelle, Pacific Northwest Division, Management and Operating Contractor of the U.S. Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), is requesting information from prospective offerors to provide: a superconducting magnet for a high field (W-Band or 95 GHz) electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectrometer. The magnet should be an actively shielded superconducting vertical field solenoid design with a maximum field of at least 9 Tesla (20 ppm homogeneity) and an 88 mm warm bore. The magnet will have permanent leads attached (no persistent mode switch) and a computer controlled power supply will be used to either set a field or ramp for field swept experiments (without a separate sweep coil). A continuous flow sample cryostat must be able to accommodate a 55 mm probe and maintain sample temperatures between 4.2 and 300K. The following type of information is requested: a) the extent of the 5 Gauss stray field line (at maximum field) in the horizontal direction; b) the minimum vertical distance from the floor to the center field, without vibration control (i.e., solid, stub legs); c) maximum/minimum field ramp rate (Tesla/minute); d) accuracy/repeatability of the field as set by the power supply for field scans (field ramps); e) inner diameter of sample cryostat; f) temperature range of cryostat; g) magnet helium consumption with zero current in the leads; h) magnet helium consumption at maximum field; i) magnet helium consumption at 3.5 Tesla; and j) the length of time to delivery from date of order. Information is requested regarding the availability of the following options of interest: a) a cryogen-free magnet system; b) the addition of a separate sweep coil (and separate sweep coil power supply if necessary); c) a persistent-mode switch; d) a similar system except with a 6 Tesla maximum field; e) high (5-10 ppm) field homogeneity; and f) additional temperature probe channels for the VT controller (for customer added sensors). Firms are requested to provide life cycle cost savings information related to provision of a cryogen-free system, assuming a 10 year life. Interested firms shall also provide information in the following areas as available: 1) A description of current experience, knowledge and capabilities directly applicable to the performance of the scope identified. 2) Information concerning current customer installation base for components similar to those described above. 3) Brochures providing descriptions of equipment, maintenance and standard warranty, along with a current published commercial pricelist. This Request for Information (RFI) is part of a market research effort that will best address PNNL's needs. This RFI is issued for information and planning purposes only and does not constitute a solicitation. Battelle does not intend to award a contract on the basis of this RFI, or to otherwise pay for information received in response to this RFI. Please provide your expression of interest to the attention of the points of contact. If you have questions or need additional information, they must also be submitted in writing to the points of contact.
