- Description
- Earth covered storage magazines (igloos) have a two step differential between the pavement and igloo floor. This 1942 design was intended for small packaged hand carried munitions which required no additional material handling equipment. However, todays larger munitions require a forklift to move munitions in and out of the storage igloos through a four foot wide door. A step differential from the apron to the door of the igloo requires ammunitions handlers to set up temporary metal ramps to allow forklifts to enter igloos. Todays larger missile containers require two munitions handlers to straddle these large containers end to end through the four foot side doors in order to store and retrieve them. The continued practice of manually setting temporary ramps creates inefficient operations, and if not corrected may result in safety hazards during icy conditions.
