Description
Based on the positive response to a previous Request for Information, theOffice of Secretary of Defense (OSD) in collaboration with the US Army willconduct a Competition (with a cash prize for the winner) in order to fosterthe ability to clear training ranges of debris and unexploded ordnance usingrobotic technologies. Experience to date with robotic range clearancesuggests a significant potential for time and cost savings as well asincreases in the safety for the personnel conducting this activity. Theultimate aim is to return to productive use the millions of acres currentlyencumbered with spent training rounds and debris. The Department of Defense(DoD) is looking for this Competition to result in viable systems that canbe procured and placed into service clearing ranges. Given the expressed industry interest and capability, the Competition eventwill be preceded by a qualification requirement. Competitors looking tocompete for the cash prize must first demonstrate a viable robotic systemcapable of executing tasks inherent in clearing ranges. Assuming asufficient quantity of competitors qualify to participate in theCompetition, the DoD will award $2M in prize awards and pursue a procurementcontract to purchase robotic range clearance systems. Both thequalification trials and the Competition will be held at Camp Guernsey, WY. A kick off meeting for the Competition will be held on 22 October, from0800-1600 hours, in the Monticello Ballroom, Crystal City Marriott, 1999Jefferson Davis Highway, Arlington, VA (near the Crystal City Metrostation). Information will be provided by DoD relating to the conduct ofthe Competition and the follow on contract during this meeting, as well asproviding networking time for potential participants. The agenda willinclude a Competition Overview, information on Camp Guernsey, a rangeclearance process overview and plans for the follow on contract. Space willalso be provided if attendees would like to distribute information on theircompany.
