- Description
- The above referenced solicitation is hereby amended to respond to technical questions submitted. Technical questions and responses 5 through 9 are hereby provided. Question 5: Question under Item 2 – what MS Windows based software does our equipment need to be interfaced with? Does the software exist or does it need to be written? Are we expected to write the software? Answer: The printers operate with Windows XP. No new software needs to be written. We can work with the inkjet system company to provide software for integration of the feeder and the printer. Question 6: Question under Item 3 – Are we expected to provide the drying area? If so, what is the amount of dry time required? Answer: Drying time is variable depending on the printer ink and may be as long as one minute. Preference would be to outfeed to a conveyor so that product has time to fully dry before being dumped into a collection bin. Question 7: Question under Item 4 – What model ink jet system will our equipment be integrated with? Most ink jet systems have a sensor that sees the product underneath the sensor and tells it when to activate – this seems to be different and we will need to know the electrical requirements for the “start/stop pulse” that our feeder needs to give the ink jet. Answer: We use various piezoelectric materials deposition systems from MicroFab technologies http:// www.microfab.com. In this first attempt at developing a high throughput printing system our intention is to interface the friction feeder to a standalone test stand printhead assembly (http://www.microfab.com/equipment/guides/guide.html) controlled by a JetDrive III drive electronics (specifications at http://www.microfab.com/equipment/pdf/jetdrive3_mf1.pdf). We have a great deal of flexibility in integrating the systems. Currently the Microfab system does not have a sensor device to know when the product is under the printhead. It would be desirable that the friction feeder provide a TTL pulse when an item is under the printhead and ready for ink to be dispensed. Question 8: Questions under Item 5 – The stack height in the hopper can only be determined after product testing. Please provide 24 – 36” of stack height for each product to determine feedability, stack height and speed. Answer: The samples which we want to print are expensive and we don’t currently have sufficient supply in house to provide the requested amount. As this is a research project, NIST intends to conduct in house testing of different potential products and modify the product characteristics as needed to meet the objective of the 24” requirement. Question 9: Questions under Item 6 – What is meant by “automated replenishment of the friction feeder product holding magazine”? Answer: This would be an option for a system to reload the stack in the hopper so that printing could continue after the hopper was exhausted. The ideal goal is unattended overnight operation requiring multiple refills of the hopper.
