Description
The Air Force Research Laboratories, Eglin AFB, Florida intends to purchase a Photoionization Detector with a flow restrictor valve for the Odor Tracking Miniature Autonomous System Program. The miniPID is a fast-response (330 Hz frequency response gas sensor capable of detecting a wide range of odors). It will be used as an odor detector on a miniature helicopter, around which appropriate odor tracking algorithms will be designed. The miniPID will also be used to assess the performance of more specialized gas sensors. Furthermore, the system will be used for fine-scale odor plume analysis. The gas sensor must be able to detect a wide range of odors and have a frequency response > 40 Hz in order to determine the fine-scale structure of an odor plume. The ability to detect a wide range of chemicals will allow for the use of environmentally safe odorants as a tracer gas in "proof of concept" experiments. Since the fine scale structure of the odor plume has been shown to influence the odor tracking performance of moths, it is anticipated that the fine-scale structure will also be an important consideration in the development of odor tracking algorithms for unmanned platforms.
