Description
RECOVERY--THIS NOTICE IS PROVIDED FOR INFORMATION PURPOSES ONLY. THIS OPPORTUNITY IS AVAILABLE ONLY TO CONTRACTORS UNDER W9127N-09-P-0363. Maintenance of the stilling basin at Fern Ridge Dam in Lane County is planned to occur during the in-water work period, August-Sept 2009. This work will occur directly below Fern Ridge dam, in the Long Tom river channel. Fern Ridge Spillway Maintenance The goal of the proposed work is to return the spillway channel to its original design capacity. Excessive vegetation and debris (perhaps from previous erosion along the right bank) have raised the elevation of the spillway channel, reducing its capacity. Over the life of the project the right bank has continually been damaged, eroded and repaired. Through excavation of loose material and vegetation, we will bring the entire spillway channel elevation back down to a maximum elevation of 340 ft. to the bridge (approx. 350 ft downstream of dam axis) continue vegetation clearing 100 ft. below the bridge and ensure continued slope as it transitions from maximum EL 340 ft. to EL 333 ft. at approximately 100 ft. downstream of bridge (approx. 500 ft. downstream of dam axis). Only trees in the channel will be removed and not trees growing on the bank. The over-all depth of the clearing will not exceed original design specs. Sediment retention facilities will be in place to minimize water quality impacts to the river. Work will be accomplished by creating a temporary road in the spillway channel, installing a culvert for the river to run through, laying gravel fill to create a road bed to allow an excavator to approach and work along the west side of the channel. The road materials and culvert will be removed when the work is-finished. This job is expected to take 5 days, and will be undertaken in late September, when releases from the dam into the river are lowest. Gravel fill volume placed for purposes of creating a temporary road bed is estimated to be approximately 100 cy, and will be composed of 3 inch quarry gravels.
