Description
In 2009, Pantex completed construction of remedial actions under the Environmental Restoration Program. This included the construction of the final remedial actions and groundwater monitoring network. The remaining environmental cleanup work to be performed at the site includes long term stewardship operations and maintenance of engineered controls at the site. Two of those engineered controls are in situ bioremediation (ISB) systems that were constructed to treat contaminated groundwater. ISB was identified in the Corrective Measures Study/Feasibility Study in September of 2007 as one corrective measures alternative for the perched groundwater to prevent migration of constituents of concern (COCs). One system is on the southeast edge of the perched groundwater; the other is south of Zone 11. The Southeast ISB consists of 42 injection wells; four amendment distribution vaults; an equipment pad with electrical, water, and amendment conveyance connections and an area for staging the injection trailer and water supply tanks (commonly called Afrac tanks) and amendment tanks; and an injection control system in a portable trailer. This area has high explosives and metals contamination, but is not amenable to extraction due to the limited saturation. The primary perched groundwater COCs in the ISB Barrier area includes Cyclotrimethylenetrinitramine (RDX) and total and hexavalent chromium. ISB was selected for this area to treat the contamination and prevent further migration of contaminants. The Zone 11 ISB consists of 32 injection wells and an equipment pad with electrical and water connections and an area for staging the injection trailer and water supply and amendment tanks. The injection control trailer from the Southeast ISB system is used at the Zone 11 system as well. The Zone 11 ISB system design addresses contaminated groundwater south of Zone 11. The primary COCs (risk drivers) in the area of the perched groundwater south of Zone 11 are perchlorate and Trichloroethylene (TCE). The objectives of this Statement of Work are to: (1)Perform inspection and maintenance of the injection wells associated with the Southeast and Zone 11 ISB Systems to maximize the effectiveness of ISB treatment; (2)Perform injection operations of amendment at the ISB systems to maintain the treatment barriers; and (3)Evaluate the treatment systems= performance and describe it in quarterly monitoring reports.
