Description
This Request for Quotations (RFQ) is for two (2) coherent fiber optic (FO) bundles for use on the National Spherical Torus Experiment (NSTX) Beam Emission Spectroscopy (BES) Diagnostic operating at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL), Princeton, New Jersey. The selected vendor shall supply 34 separate bundles in two assemblies. All bundles are to be 40 meters long and formed into 2 assemblies of 17 bundles each. There are 9 fibers in each. At the machine (viewing) end, the buffer is stripped back a considerable distance beyond the ferrule and the exposed length of cladding is protected by heat shrink tubing. The fibers of each bundle are terminated into a square ferrule at the machine (viewing) end, and a rectangular ferrule at the detector end. The selected vendor shall supply all materials, machine ferrules and form them into assemblies described in PPPL Specification No. D-NSTX-SPEC-12-102, Rev. 1, dated June 5, 2009. In its quotation, the offeror is requested to provide cost and delivery for the base number, and for a larger number of bundles. The base design is 2 assemblies of 17 bundles each, and a larger number, 2 assemblies of 21, 25, 28 or 33 bundles each. The offeror is requested to provide details of the design in the bid package and to offer an alternate design to that described by the PPPL attachments and specification, if quality, cost and or schedule are favorably impacted. The selected vendor is to furnish, at PPPL's expense, two 40 meter fiber samples to PPPL before fabrication is authorized. The samples are to be identical to the type of fiber that will be used for the bundle assemblies, polished at both ends, for PPPL to evaluate the numerical aperture (NA) and transmission characteristics. PPPL will have one week from time of receipt of the fiber samples to evaluate the fiber transmission and NA characteristics. If these fiber characteristics are found to be satisfactory, PPPL will authorize the vendor to proceed with bundle fabrication. The selected vendor is also to furnish, at PPPL's expense, 9 two meter long fiber samples. The samples are to be identical or equivalent to that specified and described in this specification, for PPPL to evaluate the bend radius characteristics of a sample bundle. That means the buffer should be stripped back 4 inches and heat shrink tubing applied. The potting and ferrule are not necessary if the heat shrink tubing extends to the end of the fibers and the 3x3 pattern is achieved. See RFQ No. 09-080-W for further details of this requirement.
