Description
The Department of Energy Office of Science mission is "to deliver the remarkable discoveries and scientific tools that transform our understanding of energy and matter and advance the national, economic, and energy security of the United States." To carry out the basic research that is critical to this mission, the Office of Science operates a complex of ten National Laboratories, which brings together teams of outstanding scientists and engineers and makes available state-of-the-art user facilities to the broader U.S. research community. Argonne, with its four cutting-edge facilities-the Advanced Photon Source (APS), the Center for Nanoscale Materials (CNM), the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF), and Argonne Tandem Linac Accelerator System (ATLAS)-and its world-class scientists, plays a leading role in the areas of nanoscience, materials, structural biology, energy systems, transportation science and technology, accelerator science, and nuclear and particle physics. However, Argonne's 50-year-old infrastructure limits its ability to contribute fully to DOE's mission. The Energy Sciences Building (ESB) will provide the 21st century scientific infrastructure needed to fully realize Argonne's potential and will have as its focus the nation's most pressing challenge of the 21st century-clean, affordable, and diverse energy. The ESB will consist of a 125,000 to 140,000 gsf state of the art three story Laboratory Office Facility.
