This project will focus on the development of a support group environment for amputees and their families. Support groups have proven to be extremely helpful to patients with a variety of different illnesses. Studies have shown that a patients major concern is that of dying alone, either literally or figuratively. The second major concern is that of having unmanaged pain. There have been at least 45 studies of support groups that have looked at quality of life. Overall they have shown that the quality of life has been much improved by the use of simple support groups. Patients have been better able to cope with pain, have less psychological distress with reduced anxiety, reduced depression and have had increased physical activity. We therefore believe that giving patients and their families access to a virtual support group environment will enable them to have access to a critical resource which they may not be able to be part of in the physical world. We also believe that this virtual support group environment will be readily adopted by those with physical disabilities as it has already been demonstrated the physically disabled are currently active in virtual worlds.
