Description
Battelle, Pacific Northwest Division, Management & Operating Contractor of the U.S. Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), is requesting information from prospective offers to provide: Atom Probe Tomography Instrumentation EMSL, a US DOE national scientific user facility, located at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, is planning to procure an atom probe tomography (APT) system. As opposed to the conventional field ion microscope(s) and the first generation 1D atom probe systems, we seek a state-of-the-art, 3-dimensional atom probe tomography tool to align well with EMSL vision to achieve sub-nanometer "chemical imaging" and to compliment the high resolution transmission electron microscope(s) and other surface and interfacial analysis tools available in the laboratory. Large field of view and rapid, accurate and repeatable, data acquisition are very essential for the success of such an instrument along with the availability of both voltage and laser pulsing capabilities. High mass resolution is a must for the system of interest in order to serve the needs of the EMSL user community and the DOE with interests in a gamut of materials, including metals, minerals, oxide multi-layers. Compatibility with focused ion beam based sample preparation is highly desired. Data analysis being the most important and critical aspect of the 3D-atom probe tomography, the potential instrument should also include high precision software to facilitate precise identification of interfaces, grain boundaries and inclusions. With this tool, we desire to provide, otherwise impossible insights into various surface and interfacial phenomena and there by understand, design and manipulate the material systems of interest to critical DOE mission(s) to develop greener and sustainable energy technologies and achieve environmental protection. Some of the specifications desired in the potential instrument are provided below: • Data acquisition rates up to 2 M ions/min • < 3 ns pulse pair resolution • Imaging resolution down to 0.2 nm lateral and 0.1 nm depth • >150 nm field-of-view (up to 200 nm) and high analyzed volumes (106 nm3) • High sensitivity to minor inclusions and dopants (down to ppm levels) In addition, we require ease of operation and windows operated user interface and controls. EMSL being a user facility, the instrument supplier should offer user friendly training, high durability and excellent technical, engineering support to minimize the down time. Interested firms shall also provide information in the following areas as available: 1) A description of current experience, knowledge and capabilities directly applicable to the performance of the scope identified. 2) Brochures providing descriptions of equipment, maintenance and standard warranty, along with a current published commercial pricelist. This Request for Information (RFI) is part of a market research effort that will best address PNNL's needs. This RFI is issued for information and planning purposes only and does not constitute a solicitation. Battelle does not intend to award a contract on the basis of this RFI, or to otherwise pay for information received in response to this RFI. Please provide your expression of interest to the attention of the points of contact listed above. If you have questions or need additional information, they must also be submitted in writing to the points of contact.
