Description
The U.S. Geological Survey intends to award a noncompetitive procurement to Australian Scientific Instruments of Fyshwick, Canberra, ACT 2609, Australia for the purchase of a software upgrade for the U.S. Geological Microprobe Laboratory that will allow automated, unattended and remote operation of the Sensitive High Resolution Ion Micro Probe with Reverse Geometry (SHRIMP-RG). The SHRIMP-RG was purchased, and is operated, in partnership with the Stanford University of Earth Sciences. The automation software is required because it will increase productivity and provide higher quality data, while reducing costs by decreasing the need for operator control of the ion microprobe and by enhancing the ability to analyze more samples per 24 hour period. Additionally, the software upgrade will allow for precise sample positioning and programmed analysis; which given the ability to pre-select positions for automated analysis (without the need for an operator present) allows standard mineral grain mounts and previously unusable samples such as rock thin sections to be quickly and accurately analyzed. The software is also necessary for future interface hardware upgrades. The automation and instrument control software is an integral part of the SHRIMP-RG and is only available from the manufacturer of the instrument, Australian Scientific Instruments and is not available from any other commercial or non-commercial sources. The original software was a collaborative effort between the USGS, Australian Scientific Instruments, and the Australian National University (ANU). This Software was written specifically for the SHRIMP-RG at Stanford and a sister SHRIMP-RG at the ANU. These are the only SHRIMP-RGs in the world. The software purchase also includes 1 week of training and software customization to interface with the specific hardware configuration in the USGS-Stanford SHRIMP-RG to meet unique USGS research requirements. No other sources are known to possess the unique and essential qualifications in the above-mentioned information. This is not a request for competitive quotes and no solicitation is available. Firms that believe they can provide these supplies and services are encouraged to identify themselves and give written notification to the Contracting Officer within 5 days of the publication date of this synopsis. Determination by the Government not to compete this action based on responses to this notice is solely with the discretion of the Government. Information received will be considered solely for the purpose of determining to conduct a competitive procurement. Point of Contact: Cheryl Fitch, Contracting Specialist, cfitch@usgs.gov. All requests for information shall be in writing.
