Description
Research and development efforts at Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) have lead to the capability for testing and developing closed Brayton cycles including supercritical Brayton cycles for power production. This technology for producing electrical power can be driven by a nuclear reactor, a solar receiver, a natural gas, geo-thermal or coal flame or other sources of thermal energy. Two Brayton cycles have been assembled, are operating, and are available for testing. One is a low pressure Brayton cycle that operates up to 900 K and has a compressor inlet pressure that is near one atmosphere. The other is a supercritical CO2 Brayton cycle and compression loop that is being used at compressor inlet presures up to 1300 psia and maximum pressures to 2200 psia. Concepts, and prototype control algorithms, and dynamic system models also have been developed for both systems. Sandia’s primary focus is in seeking a company or companies interested in partnering opportunities leading to implementation and application of this technology. Partnerships may take the form of Cooperative Research & Development Agreements (CRADA), commercial licenses or Work for Others agreements. Commercial licensees will have the option to obtain, up to and including, an exclusive license to the intellectual property in a pre-negotiated, defined field of use for reasonable compensation. CRADAs are expected to include funds-in to Sandia. Sandia is a multiprogram laboratory operated by Sandia Corporation, a Lockheed Martin Company, for the United States Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration under Contract DE-AC04-94AL85000. For further information, please respond to Steven A. Wright at Sandia National Laboratories by email SAWRIGH@SANDIA.GOV or by FAX 505-284-3651.
