Description
The General Services Administration (GSA) Region 7 is seeking qualifications for the design and installation of a retrofit metal coil screen system for an eight story courthouse in El Paso, Texas. QUALIFICATIONS A. Fabric Manufacturer’s Qualifications: Single firm specializing in woven wire coil screen for use in decorative type installations, with at least 5 years successful experience in design and manufacturing. B. Fabricator / Installer Qualifications: Approved by the stainless steel coil screen manufacturer for installation of specified system, with at least 5 years of experience. SYSTEM DESCRIPTION A. Design Responsibility: Design metal coil screen and cable system to withstand the design loads and thermal movement as specified in Article entitled “Performance Requirements”. B. Metal Coil Screen Sub-Contractor’s Responsibilities: Engage a qualified Fabricator / Installer to assume undivided responsibility for complete design, engineering and installation of the metal coil screen and cable system. Coordinate anchor reactions with building’s structural engineer. C. Design Engineer: Employ a registered structural engineer, licensed in the State of Texas, to verify that the proposed method of attachment as indicated on the drawings meets the “Performance Requirements” specified in this Section. 1. This engineer shall determine all methods of attachment, size and thickness of brackets and springs, the size of rods and cables woven into coil screen, and type of stainless steel for all attachment components. 2. This engineer shall also verify that the proposed stainless steel coil screen is capable of resisting the specified Design Loads without failure. 3. This engineer shall prepare, stamp and sign all required structural calculations; this same engineer shall also approve the Installer’s shop drawings. 4. This engineer shall interact with building’s structural engineer regarding anchor reactions. 5. This engineering does not require blast testing of metal coil spring. PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS A. General: Provide a metal coil screen and cable system that has been fabricated and installed to comply with the following requirements for system performance. B. Design Loads: Design and fabricate the entire system and attachment hardware to withstand positive and negative (inward and outward) wind pressures of 38 psf. Design coil screen and cable system to resist loading, as specified elsewhere in documents, without impacting glazed facade. C. Building Movement: Provide for movement of the primary building structure without detriment to performance or system components. D. Thermal Movement: System shall accommodate expansion and contraction within system components caused by ambient temperature range of ±70°F without detrimental effect to system components. E. Interface with Support Structure: Attachment system shall accommodate allowable tolerances and deflections for structural members in installation. MATERIALS A. Stainless Steel Coil Screen: Provide stainless steel coil screen meeting the following minimum requirements: 1. Manufacturer and Type: woven stainless steel fabric, 3/8 inch mesh, 14 gauge. 2. Finish: Antique Copper. 3. Open Area: 62%. 4. Overall Coil Screen Size: Furnish coil screen in one (1) piece sections for full width and length required for each individual area. Joining of two or more sections within a separate area is acceptable only if mockup is approved by the Architect. B. Stainless Steel Cable 1. Provide high strength stainless steel to form a smooth coil single strand multiple wire cable. 2. Cables shall be pre-stretched. 3. Wire shall meet or exceed ASTM A492 Type 316. C. Accessories: All fittings, anchors, fasteners and other accessories shall be made from AISI Type 316 Stainless Steel. INSTALLATION A. General: Install connection brackets and coil screen in accordance with the approved shop drawings. Coil screen shall be taut across each opening. B. Protect installations of metal coil screens from damage during construction period. Restore or replace damaged fabric and fittings so that no evidence remains of correction work. C. Since this is a retrofit application, the installer will be required to remove and replace existing work that is damaged or removed for installation access.
