Description
The National Park Service (NPS) Great Lakes Inventory and Monitoring Network (GLKN) is collecting tissue samples from fish in water bodies at six national parks across the Great Lakes region to monitor trends in targeted contaminants. This is a three-year pilot project that may lead to full implantation as part of a long-term ecological monitoring program for nine national parks in the upper Midwest. NPS scientists and contractors will collect, process, and freeze (@ -20 0F) the edible fillets of northern pike (Esox lucius), grass pickerel (Esox americanus), walleye (Sander vitreus), smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu), and largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) from selected study lakes. The species being collected will depend on availability at each lake. Laboratory analyses will be done on composite samples of axial muscle tissue of the sampled fish. The composite sample will contain equal masses of tissue from 8 individual fish of a single species. A composite sample will be analyzed for either 9 or 18 water bodies during each year of sampling. We will create a duplicate composite sample for either one or two of the study sites for quality assurance purposes, yielding a total of either 10 or 20 composite samples per year. The exact sample size will depend on per sample costs and availability of funds. Please refer to Solicitation Q2105080171 for full details of this contract.
