- Description
- This is a modification to the synopsis entitled LUNAR REGOLITH EXCAVATION HANDLINGAND PROCESSING TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT AND DEMONSTRATIONS FOR OUTPOST OPERATIONS which wasposted on May 30, 2008. You are notified that the second paragraph in the "Description"section is replaced by the following changes, which expands on the basis for solicitingon a non-competitive basis: NASA/GRC intends to contract with the Canadian Commercial Corporation (CCC) and theNorthern Centre for Advanced Technology (NORCAT) to obtain small-scale lunar-compatibleregolith excavation and handling technologies and geomechanical lunar regolith simulant. This effort involves collaborative use of complementary lunar regolith test bins at bothNORCAT and GRC utilizing the NORCAT developed lunar regolith geomechanical simulant,"OB1," which is proprietary to NORCAT; development of small-scale lunar excavationimplements for delivery to NASA for evaluation and testing; development of approaches tolunar mining addressing mining logistics and hardware reliability; and the development ofsmall-scale lunar regolith processing and handling devices for delivery to NASA forevaluation and testing. It is believed that only NORCAT through CCC can provide thiseffort, as there is no other source that can provide the combined terrestrial andextra-terrestrial mining technology development and testing background in conjunctionwith a recognized lunar geotechnical regolith simulant. This effort will complement andextend ongoing work at GRC and other NASA centers to evaluate lunar mining concepts andimplements using other lunar regolith simulants developed with support from NASA.The due date for responses is extended to Friday, June 27, 2008.
