- This publication serves as a Notice of Intent to negoiate a sole source contract with Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife for NOAA, National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) to Design and completion of field study to estimate wild and hatchery Chinook salmon egg-to-fry in six or more study reaches in the Yakima River basin. Study design and detailed description of field methods. The contracto will provide detailed description of study design including sample size and field and laboratory (hatchery) methods. Selection of study sites and construction of egg incubation chambers. Prior to collection of adult salmon and eggs, it is critical to preselect study reaches (sites) throughout the basin. The contractor will survey basin and provide a list of at least 6 study reaches with different levels of habitat quality. Collection of adult salmon and eggs. August and September 2008. Collect mature adult salmon from spawning grounds, collect and fertilize eggs, place them in hatchery until they will be implanted in artificial redds. Construction of artificial redds and placement of eggs in redds. August and September. Construct 10 or more artificial redds in each of 6 or more reaches within the Yakima River basin. Insert incubators with fertilized hatchery and wild salmon eggs collected in previous task into artificial redds. Excavate artificial redds and estimate egg to fry survival - November through March. Monitor habitat conditions at a subset of artificial redds, remove incubators from all artificial redds in March. Enumerate number of dead eggs, live eggs, emergent fry in incubators excavated from artificial redds and estimate egg-to-fry survival. Project completion report - Completion May 31, 2008 - Provide report summarizing methods, results of study and recommendations for improving study in 2009. This notice is not a request for competitive proposals, however, all proposals received within 15 days after date of publication of this synopsis will be considered by the government.
