Email david.decandia@us.army.mil.Contractor. AAI Corporation, Hunt Valley, MD Description. The Joint Munitions & Lethality Life Cycle Management Command intends to award a follow-on, 5 year, Cost-Plus Incentive Fee contract for continuation of the Lightweight Family of Weapons and Ammunition (LFWA)/Lightweight Small Arms Technologies (LSAT) Technology Base Project,. This contract continues the development of technologies to reduce the weight and size of current small caliber weapons and ammunition, originally developed under the LFWA contract W15QKN-04-C-1085 and its modifications. Some of the technologies developed under that contract include caseless and cased telescoped ammunition, weapon recoil mitigation, materials technologies, and thermal management. The contractor shall continue the development and maturation of these technologies so that they can be transitioned to a System Development and Demonstration phase, to be executed by the Project Manager Soldier Weapons. The focus of this effort will be risk mitigation of the caseless ammunition, which offers the greatest weight and size reduction payoff, but still presents substantial risk at this stage of development. The other technologies will also continue to be developed using a systems engineering approach, to increase the chance of success for the integrated system. The focus of this effort will be on the critical technologies needed to achieve weapons and ammunition which are lightweight and compact, yet provide maximum lethality, accuracy and reliability at a reasonable cost. These critical technologies have already been identified as follows: Advanced Ammunition (Caseless or Cased Telescoped)Materials TechnologiesAdvanced modeling and simulation to identify the most effective design and use of materialsThermal Management, including control of heat output from ammunition and the mitigation of heat throughout the weapon system None of the technologies can operate independently of the others and achieve the desired performance, therefore these technologies must be developed using a parallel, integrated system approach. Place of Performance. Hunt Valley, MD Numbered Note 22 will apply to this Synopsis and resulting Solicitation.
