- Performance Specifications for Compact Storage System for the Library at the Western Archeological and Conservation Center 1. Location:Compact storage will be installed in the library (Room 502) of the Western Archeological and Conservation Center (WACC), 255 North Commerce Park Loop, Tucson, Arizona. 2. Background:The National Park Service is installing compact storage in the research library. The compact storage system will occupy an area approximately 29.5 feet by 27 feet and be set on a raised floor/rails. Maximum height of the carriages shall be 7.75 feet above the floor. The maximum length of the carriages shall be 27.5 feet. Offerors may make an appointment to see the space to verify the as-built conditions by contacting Tef Rodeffer, Museum Services Program Manager, at 520.791.6401. 3. Site Description:The flooring system is concrete slab with floor tile. The structural slab in the library area is designed for a live-load of 150 pounds per square foot. The rails and flooring for the compact storage must be set over the finished floor. Walls are drywall. The finished ceiling height is 9 feet 5 inches above the finished floor. Fire sprinkler heads project approximately 2 inches below the finished ceiling. A structural pier on the southwest corner of the space constrains the location of the south and west extent of the compact storage system (See Drawing 2). 4. Site Access:The building sits at ground level. Access is through the loading dock. Overhead doors in the loading dock measure 9.25 feet wide and 12 feet high. An internal lift is available for trucks of a size to fit within the loading dock door. A 25 foot hallway accessed by double doors leads to the main 200 foot hallway. The library is located at the far end this hallway, 35 feet to the north (See Drawing 1). The single library door clear open width is approximately 35 inches. An area approximately 12 x 30 feet in the library across from the compact storage site could be made available for staging. 5. General Mobile Storage System Requirements: 5A - General Performance Requirements.- Storage system shall be mobile units with tracks and safety devices, and built to contain offeror-fabricated shelving.- The movable carriages shall be consistent in design, construction, height, and finishes in the final installation.- The operation of carriages shall be quiet and smooth and exhibit no jerking, lunging, irregular movement, or noticeable variation in movement under any loading conditions. - Minimum 18 inch clearance is required between top of cabinets and the bottom edge of the fire sprinklers. - Carriages must be non-combustible, with a hard, durable finish with no off-gassing.- Carriages shall be welded "Uni-frame" steel or aluminum construction.- Carriage construction shall be designed to allow shelving frames to recess and interlock into the carriages a minimum of inches. - The shelving units shall be secured to the frame with vibration-proof anchors. - Each shelf unit shall have "Front to Back" reinforcements, constructed of 22 gauge steel. - All exposed carriage ends shall have face panels and all visible exposed edges shall be finished.- Two 3 x 5 inch cardholders shall be provided per aisle entry location with centers located 60 inches above the finished floor.- Carriage guidance system shall be with either dual flange or center flange with steel roller bearing wheels with minimum rolling friction.- Carriage system must be able to lock down after moving for safety purposes.- Mechanical Assist (hand crank system) for all mobile carriages.- Mobile carriage system shall have heavy duty embedded seismic anti-tip devices that meet Zone 3 seismic conditions.- Carriages shall be equipped with "rubber" bumpers to create a minimum of 4 inch and maximum of 6 inch park position space between closed carriages to improve the fire protection. - The floating aisle width between carriages shall be a minimum of 36 inches and a maximum of 48 inches.- Carriage rails or tracks shall have interlocking joints to avoid damage from heavy loads.- Carriages are designed to meet the approximate lengths and widths as shown on the attached drawings. The final length of the carriages will be determined by the contractor's final design.- Four- post shelving will be designed to maximize storage capacity and efficiency for storing books. 5B - Track Requirements:- The maximum floor live load is 150 pounds per square foot (PSF). - The weight shall be distributed evenly among the individual rails.- The contractor shall provide weight summary reports showing the loading for each carriage and how the loads are distributed. - The rails will be fastened to the surface of the concrete floor slab.- Tracks shall be installed in the entire area (approximately 800 square feet). 5C -Specific Carriage Requirements:- Six (6) carriages will be installed (see light blue shading, Drawing 2).- Each carriage is approximately 22.5 inches deep, comprised of double faced shelving sections. - Each section is approximately 36 inches wide to accommodate library materials without creating wasted space. - Shelf sections should create an approximate 27 foot span and run full height allowed under general requirements. - A top is required for each shelf section to provide dust control. Shelves are approximately 10 inches deep, can be fixed to provide a minimal opening of 12 inches, are adjustable, and are able to withstand the weight of closely packed library books up to 10 inches wide. - Four-post style shelving will be used, with backs or dividers between faces. 5D - Fixed Shelving:- One unit of single faced fixed shelving will be installed at the south end of the area (see light blue shading Drawing 2). - Shelf sections should create an approximate 27 foot span and run full height allowed under general requirements to parallel the carriages.- Shelf sections are approximately 36 inches wide to accommodate library materials without creating wasted space. A top is required for each shelf section to provide dust control.- Shelves are 12 inches deep. Shelves in three sections will be fixed with 15 inch openings; shelves in the remaining six sections will be fixed with 12 inch openings. Shelving heights will be adjustable and able to withstand the weight of closely packed oversize library books.- Four-post style shelving will be used, with backs on the south side. 5E - Installation Details:- Contractor shall install the carriage system, including rails and carriages.- Finished product must be level, secure, and meet Zone 3 seismic conditions.- Contractor is responsible for verifying all measurements before ordering materials. 5F - Finishes:- The color and texture of mobile shelving shall be coordinated with the room finishes. A color palette shall be provided to the NPS for selection.- All exposed carriage ends shall have face panels of Nevermar Copper Fusion laminate to match existing built-in cabinetry.- The paint coatings shall be no VOC, non-volatile, inert, powder coated, and properly cured. 5G - Flooring Requirements:- A false floor shall be constructed between the rails and across the aisles. The false flooring material shall be smooth, hard, durable, and emit no off-gassing. The flooring material shall be low maintenance and conducive to cleaning and washing. A color palette shall be provided to the NPS for selection.- The void space between the underside of the false floor and the building floor shall be filled with a material to prevent dust collection and insect habitat. - The floor may be created with a homogeneous material that meets the above criteria.- Ramps shall be provided to access the carriages, and shall have a maximum of 24 inches or match the depth of adjacent storage units. The slope shall not create a side step safety issue when entering the carriage aisles. 6. Additional Options: The National Park Service plans to add additional carriages and one additional fixed shelving unit to complete the full compact storage system layout as funds are available. 6A - Individual Carriages:- Up to five (5) additional carriages identical to those described in Section 5C may be purchased if funds are available (see green shading, Drawing 2).- Submit a cost per carriage that meets the requirements in Sections 5A, 5C, and 5F including installation per Section 5E. 6B - Fixed Shelving:- One additional fixed shelving unit identical to the one in described in Section 5D may be purchased if funds are available (see green shading, Drawing 2).- Submit a cost for one (1) fixed shelving unit that meets the requirements in Sections 5A, 5D, and 5F, including installation per Section 5E. 7. Drawings NOTE: The drawings are approximately to scale and for informational purposes. The offeror is responsible for verifying the as-built dimensions of the space for placement of the rails and layout of the storage systems.
