- Description
- The Technology Applications Program Office (TAPO) is seeking a light weight replacement for the current heavy steel Ballistic Protection System (BPS) currently used on its rotary wing aircraft. As a result TAPO has the requirement to conduct a live fire on readily available aircraft armor panels (ballistic protection). These systems should encompass the gamut of light weight ballistic protection to meet the objective and threshold requirements below. Those firms who would like to participate in these live fire tests are invited to provide two 1 x 1 (1 square foot panels) at no cost to the government for the government’s use in the tests. Ballistic performance tests will be carried out using the following criteria: •Range/Obliquity : –Threshold:300 meters from muzzle and zero obliquity (300m, 0 Deg) –Objective:100 meters from muzzle and zero obliquity (100m, 0 Deg) •Ballistic Protection –Threshold:7.62mm x M1943 ball –Objective:5.45mm x 39 Full Metal Jacket Type PS •Repeatability –Threshold:2 rounds within a 3” diameter –Objective:2 rounds within a 1” diameter The armor should be in its deployable state (i.e. have any and all coatings typically used when in normal operation in a combat environment). Firms will only be provided the results from their own ballistic panel’s test event and will not have access to the another firms results. This is a Government only test event and participating firms cannot witness the test. Additionally the Government requests the written composition of the armor panel to determine if any material or environmental concerns exist. These details will be maintained by the Government and will not be shared with other firms. The Government conducted live fire test is anticipated to occur in early July 08. As a result each firm’s panels must be delivered no later than 23 June 08. TAPO Technical POC for this action is Sean Heatherman, Aerospace Engineer, (757) 878-3299 ext 266
