Description
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is preparing a design for an infiltration gallery (water intake structure) at Buckland, Alaska. The Contractor, under this SOW, will provide all drilling and mobilization/demobilization services to accomplish the exploration in the area identified for construction of the infiltration gallery. The exploration will focus on two areas of the Buckland River immediately in front of the village. The purpose of this exploration is to drill through the ice in the river to determine if there is water below the ice and then to determine the extent of the thaw bulb below the river channel. At the first location four borings will be drilled through the ice and to a depth of 30 feet below mudline or until rock or frozen soil is encountered. It is anticipated that the thickness of the ice and water will be about five feet or less. One of the borings will be advanced and a screen (five feet of screen) and pump will be installed and a pump test will b e performed for a minimum of four hours. It is anticipated that sand will be required around the screen and that a minimum of two bags of bentonite will be used as a seal above the screen section. Two additional borings will be drilled and samp led on shore near this location to a depth of 20 feet. All soil sampling will be performed with a 2.5-inch inside diameter split-spoon at five foot intervals down the boring. At the second location the water depth (including the ice) is believed t o be about 15 feet but there is limited current in the area. At this location two borings will be drilled and sampled to a depth of 20 feet below mudline or until rock or frozen ground are encountered. At this location one additional boring to 20 feet will be drilled on shore.
