Description
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Coordinating Center for Infectious Diseases (CCID), National Center for Preparedness, Detection and Control of Infectious Diseases (NCPDCID), Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion (DHQP) is seeking to award a one-year sole source cost-type Research and Development contract to design cost-effective, user friendly prototype elastic textile masks which reduce leakage around the face and can be challenged with microorganisms in the laboratory environment to show potential protection against infectious aerosols in a healthcare setting. Researchers will design and evaluate a minimum of three innovative textile solutions (prototypes) for the prevention of respiratory infections in healthcare settings while providing effective fit for various human features, comfort, ability to communicate with patients clearly, and ability of the wearer to tolerate prolonged wear. Features such as a reliable shelf life of several years, launderability, and re-use are key elements of a successful prototype. Design and production of new textiles in addition to or in the absence of commercially available ones are acceptable. In accordance with Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) 6.302-1, the Government has determined that the textile scientific expertise resident at the Georgia Tech Applied Research Center makes the Georgia Tech Applied Research Center the only responsible source to satisfy this requirement. Subject to the availability of funds, the Government intends to request a proposal on 6 February, with award by 31 March 2008. Firms that believe they can provide the requirement are encouraged to identify themselves and provide written notification to the Contracting Officer within fifteen (15) days from the date of this synopsis posting. Information received will be considered solely for the purpose of determining whether to conduct a competitive procurement.
