THIS IS A REQUEST FOR INFORMATION (RFI) FOR PLANNING PURPOSES ONLY. This RFI is issued for the purpose of developing a viable solicitation that will best communicate the Government's requirem ents to industry. Response to this RFI is strictly voluntary and will not affect any corporation's ability to submit an offer when a solicitation is released. There is no bid package or solicitation document associated with this announcement. The reques ted information is for planning purposes and does not constitute a commitment, implied or otherwise, that a procurement action will be issued. No entitlement to payment by the Government of direct or indirect costs or charges will arise as a result of the submission of contractors' information. The Government shall not be liable for or suffer any consequential damages for any improperly identified proprietary information. Proprietary information will be safeguarded in accordance with the applicable Gover nment regulations. The purpose of this announcement is to determine industrys interest, capability, methodology and utilization regarding the recycling and reuse of the following materials: high molecular weight polyethylene (HMWPE), para-aramid nylon (i.e. Kevlar, Twaron) , and other nylon fabrics. It is imperative that no attempt be made to refurbish any of the components for ballistic protection. The government currently estimates approximately 150,000 200,000 soft armor vests to be removed from service over the next 3 to 5 years. The average w eight of a vest is approximately 11 pounds. Ballistic nylon consists of approximately 60-70% of the weight while the remaining 40% consists largely of Cordura type nylon shell and webbing along with snaps and fasteners. The Government will evaluate submitted information to determine future direction and development of an acquisition plan for required services. Point of Contact John Kirejczyk Project Engineer
