- Description
- Expert services are required to support the National Library of Medicine's mandate to provide bibliographic control of all English language biomedical serials procured for the NLM, to announce these publications to the worldwide biomedical community and to assist biomedical libraries in the bibliographic control of their serial acquisitions by providing cataloging copy. The National Library of Medicine has an arrearage of over 1,200 titles in the English language which the Cataloging Section is mandated to begin to eliminate during the next fiscal year. NLM requires assistance in cataloging these serials since it does not have the necessary resources to catalog them. In order to bring the backlog of over 1,200 uncataloged English language serials under control, NLM requires assistance in cataloging between 125-200 serial titles in these languages. NLM anticipates that (a) approximately 50-80 items will constitute new serial titles cataloged; and (b) approximately 75-120 items will be titles completed from records identified in the OCLC WorldCAT. The project entails: 1) searching titles in the OCLC WorldCAT, an outside bibliographic source, to identify and download any matching serial bibliographic records available into NLM?s Voyager catalog; 2) verifying/correcting bibliographic data, including name and series access points, on existing bibliographic records in accordance with Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, Second Edition, rev. 1998 (AACR2R) rules, the Library of Congress Rule Interpretations (LCRIs), the CONSER Standard Record Guidelines (CSR), and NLM Instructions for Serials Cataloging, in the Voyager and OCLC databases; 3) adding appropriate NLM subject headings (MeSH) and classification numbers as needed to the record in Voyager and OCLC; and 4) tagging the identified OCLC records found with NLM?s special holdings symbol, adding NLM?s unique control numbers, title abbreviations, and indexing information as needed. See Statement of Work for details of requirements.
