- Description
- TECHNOLOGY/BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY Mosaic Transparent Armor Opportunity: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), operated by the University of California under contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), is offering the opportunity to license and commercialize the technology to make Mosaic Transparent Armor. Description: Mosaic Transparent Armor provides a means of making windows which are made up of small transparent tiles which are bonded together. These tiles are usually made of glass/ceramics or other impact proof, high performance material. The tiles are bonded together with a transparent adhesive having an index of refraction which matches the index of refraction of the tiles, so that the seams and joints between tiles are virtually invisible. The use of mosaic tiles restricts the damage from an impacting projectile to a small part of the window's total area. This localization of damage gives the window the ability to withstand multiple impacts while still providing visibility through the undamaged portions of the window. Windows made from mosaic tiles can provide equivalent performance at a lower weight than current state of the art. The technology also permits the use of smaller transparent tiles to fabricate a larger window at a lower cost. Potential Applications: This technology is useful for producing bullet and explosion resistant glass for use in cars and armored trucks. It could also be used for window glass for use in areas with hazardous conditions. Advantages: Mosaic Transparent Armor has several advantages over current transparent armor which is made from one continuous piece or a laminate layers of transparent materials. These advantages are as follows: ? Damage is localized to the impacted tile. ? Can use smaller tiles of transparent material which are easier and cheaper to fabricate. ? Can provide equivalent performance at a lower weight. Development Status: LLNL is currently working on prototype Mosaic Transparent Armor windows made of transparent glass/ceramic tiles. LLNL has also filed a Provisional Patent Application covering the invention. To see a demonstration picture of the Mosiac Transparent Armor, go to: http://www.llnl.gov/IPandC/technology/profile/announcement/MosaicTransparentArmor.php LLNL is seeking industry partners with a demonstrated ability to bring such inventions to the market. Moving critical technology beyond the Laboratory to the commercial world helps our licensees gain a competitive edge in the marketplace. All licensing activities are conducted under policies relating to the strict nondisclosure of company proprietary information. Please visit the IPAC website at http://www.llnl.gov/IPandC/workwithus/partneringprocess.php for more information on working with LLNL and the industrial partnering and technology transfer process. Note: THIS IS NOT A PROCUREMENT. Companies interested in commercializing LLNL's Mosaic Transparent Armor should provide a written statement of interest, which includes the following: 1. Company Name and address. 2. The name, address, and telephone number of a point of contact. 3. A description of corporate expertise and facilities relevant to commercializing this technology. Written responses should be directed to: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Industrial Partnerships and Commercialization P.O. Box 808, L-795 Livermore, CA 94551-0808 Attention: FBO 154-07 Please provide your written statement within thirty (30) days from the date this announcement is published to ensure consideration of your interest in LLNL's Mosaic Transparent Armor technology.
