Description
This is a combined synopsis/solicitation for NOAA, National Marine Fisheries Service located in Seattle, WA to provide: Tooth ageing and age at length modeling The age at death of beach cast carcasses and harvested animals provide important information necessary to interpret cause of death and other necropsy results and to include population models to estimate survival rates and population viability. In addition, where length and gender are known the age at length relationship for the population can be determined and used to estimate the age of individuals for which teeth are not available. Currently NMFS has jaws and teeth for 30-35 individuals that require ageing. When these ages are completed the data can be combined with data from approximately 40 other individuals to estimate length at age curves for males, females and unknown gender. This contract will provide funding to age 4 to 10 teeth for up to 35 individuals following the protocol in Vos (2003), complete analysis of the results with previous results and prepare a document for peer review. Research Plan Contractor will age 4 to 10 teeth for up to 35 individuals (teeth and jaws provided by NMFS) following the protocol in Vos (2003). A second reader will be provided by NMFS at no cost to the contract. Teeth will be identified by individual and location on the jaw and sufficient teeth will be analyzed for each jaw to allow subsequent analysis of the optimal location in the jaw for aging by a single tooth. Contractor will review and where necessary confirm identity and lengths of samples with original field collection data provided by NMFS. Results will be combined with an existing dataset (provided by NMFS) including approximately 40 individuals and will be analyzed to identify the best location on the jaw for aging by a single tooth and estimate age and length curves. Analysis will include, overall characteristics of the data, comparison of readers, comparison of left and right jaws, comparison of tooth positions 1 to 10 and age/length curves for male, females and gender unknown individuals. Products and deliverables: Contractor will provide to NMFS a report and database with the complete results for the ageing of each tooth and the data to be used for the age at length models. Contractor will prepare a manuscript describing the results for publication in a peer reviewed journal. COST Narative: It is anticipated that the work will be completed in Alaska so a ? COLA is included and ?% overhead, and hourly rate at $____/hr. We anticipate that 520 hours will be required to complete the analysis of the teeth and prepare the database and 280 hours are required to complete the analysis, prepare a manuscript and consult on the results. Contractor is expected to travel to Seattle to consult with Dr. Hobbs regarding application of the ageing results to population models. Alaska COLA % Self employ % A. Timeline and Milestones The work is divided into 4 sections. 1. remove teeth from jaws-mount and cut teeth ( 200 hours ) 2. read teeth 200 hours 3. develop database-verify life history data-data report on results 120 hours 4. statistical analysis-manuscript preparation-consult on results 280 hours Total hours 800 Travel Supplies Grand Total Period of Performance: from 1 September 2007 to 31 May 2008. All interested parties must respond to this announcement within fifteen (15) calendar days of its publication. All responses must be in writing and may be faxed to 206-527-7166 attention Melvin Fondue
