- Description
- NASA/JSC has a requirement for a Focused Ion Beam (FIB) System for analysis of extraterrestrial and terrestrial materials. NASA/JSC intends to purchase the items from FEI Company because the FEI tool is the only system that can meet the research goals and Mission support requirements with in the Astromaterials Research and Exploration Science (ARES) division. FEI's Quanta FEG 3D 600 system provides the following unique capabilities: (1) FEI's (Quanta FEG 3D 600) base instrument utilizes a new version of the standard Sidewinder ion column with improved spatial resolution and capability of high operating currents (65nA) as needed, (2) the design of the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) column allows for the longest working distances available (10mm), (3) FEI's main vacuum chamber is designed with multiple access ports to allow incorporation of additional sample processing and manipulation tools while the sample stage is configured to allow the simultaneous incorporation of scanning electron microscopy and scanning-transmission electron microscopy (SEM-STEM) detector for high contrast, high resolution analysis, and (4) the availability of additional access ports will allow ARES to develop new techniques specifically tailored to astormaterials research (e.g. cryo-FIB prep) and incorporation of additional sample manipulation tools. The Government intends to acquire a commercial item using FAR Part 12. Interested organizations may submit capabilities and qualifications to perform the effort in writing to the identified point of contact not later than 4:30 p.m. local time on July 30, 2007. Such capabilities/qualifications will be evaluated solely for the purpose of determining whether or not to conduct this procurement on a competitive basis. A determination by the Government not to compete this proposed effort on a full and open competition basis, based upon responses to this notice, is solely within the discretion of the government. Oral communications are not acceptable in response to this notice. All responsible sources may submit an offer which shall be considered by the agency. An Ombudsman has been appointed.
