Description
The centennial of the US Department of the Interior, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Forestry Program will be in 2010. As part of the observance of this milestone in Indian Forest Management, the BIA is seeking sources that are capable of producing an administrative history of the program covering the period of 1986 to 2010. In 1986 a history of the Forestry program was published. A Forest in Trust: Three Quarters of a Century of Indian Forestry, 1910-1986, was researched and written by the Historical Research Associates of Missoula, MT. Our objective for this project is to develop a companion history document The project is to research and write an administrative history of the Indian Forestry Program covering the period of 1986 to 2010. The history will include changes in law, policy, and other significant developments affecting the program. Some of the changes during this period are: enactment of the National Indian Forest Resources Management Act of 1990; enactment of the Tribal Self-Governance Act of 1994; a major revision of the General Forestry Regulations (25 CFR Part 163) in 1995; two independent assessments of the Indian Forestry Program; tribes assuming forest management responsibilities; intertribal organizations emerging as advocates for Indian natural resource interests; changing forest management practices; and the changing role of the BIA in the management of Indian forest resources. In addition to tracking significant policy changes and events over the 25 year period, the project will include in-depth research on the forest management programs for a number of specific reservations and conducting oral history interviews with BIA, tribal, and other officials associated with Indian Forestry. The list of reservations for in-depth study and the list of potential interviewees will be determined in consultation with the BIA Division of Forestry and Wildland Fire Management. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Bored stiff?
