- Description
- THIS IS A REQUEST FOR INFORMATION (RFI) ONLY. The National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST) is seeking potential suppliers for several specialized optical elements for use at ~THz frequency. The suppliers must have the capability to machine, polish, and verify the shape and surface finish of the components. The elements consist of 2 mirrors to be fabricated of 6000 series aluminum alloy and one lens to be fabricated from UHMW polyethylene. Mirror 1 has a diameter of ~ 1.3 meters; mirror 2 has a diameter of ~0.44 meters, and the lens has a diameter of ~0.23 meters. The supplier shall provide the aluminum; NIST will furnish the polyethylene. Pertinent characteristics are: 1. All elements are axisymmetric with aspheric shape. NIST will provide the aspherical shape as polynomial coefficients. 2. Dimensional drawings of the elements shall be provided as SolidWorks sldprt files or equivalent format. 3. Deviations of the optically active mirror surfaces from the theoretical shape shall not exceed 20 microns. This measurement must be done after completion of all polishing and stress relief. 4. Surface roughness and waviness of the mirrors measured over a 1 mm by 1 mm area shall not exceed 5 microns rms. If the supplier has the ability to reduce this figure below 5 microns rms it should be indicated together with an indication of the scaling between roughness/waviness and part cost. Responses: Responses to this RFI must include: 1. A summary of data from aspherical optical elements of similar size and tolerances demonstrating the supplier?s ability to meet the requirements of items 3 and 4 above. 2. A description of how the supplier would propose to achieve and demonstrate compliance with items 3 and 4 above. This should include a non-proprietary description of the machining techniques and equipment, measurement equipment, and data reduction and presentation protocols. 3. An indication of how the supplier would propose to address the issues of machining-induced stresses and workpiece stress relief. 4. A description of how the supplier would propose to machine the polyethylene lens and the tolerances that could be held. This RFI does not constitute an invitation for Bids, Request for Proposals or Request for Quotes. This is not a request for proposal and there is no solicitation available. Responses to this RFI will not be returned. In accordance with FAR 15.202(e), responses to this notice are not offers and cannot be accepted by the Government to form a binding contract. Responders are solely responsible for all expenses associated with responding to this RFI. NIST will use the results of this RFI to estimate expected cost and identify possible sources to support this future requirement. Any contractors doing business with the Government must be registered with the Central Contractor Registry. The web site is http://www.ccr.gov/ . All information should be submitted in writing to: Kelly Rima, U.S. Dept. of Commerce/NOAA/MRAD, Acquisition Division, MC3, 325 Broadway, Boulder, CO 80305 no later than February 28, 2007. No telephone calls will be accepted or returned.
