Description
The U.S. Army, TACOM- Picatinny Arsenal, N.J. is conducting a market survey to identify sources that are capable of supplying a lightweight molding material(s) for cylindrical containers. Material(s) need to have the ability to be molded by common processes, particularly injection molding, with a cured state having a low overall weight and high impact strength. The material(s) will be used to fabricate two types of cylindrical ammunition containers: Container #1: 2.72??? OD (max), 2.40??? ID (min), 17.73??? outside length (max), 17.53??? inside length (min), total estimated weight of .56 lbs. Container #2: 4??? OD (max), 3.24???ID (min), 27.0625??? outside length (max), 26.5??? inside length (min), total estimated weight of 3 lbs. Attached drawings may be used for reference to address concerns regarding the cap and body tube distinction of each container. It is desired that the material(s) identified be of lowest raw material and manufacturing cost while meeting requirements. Cured containers shall not creep, exhibit low toxicity, resist UV and be resistant to such chemicals as hydraulic fluid, gasoline, ethylene glycol, lubricating oil and diesel fuel. Low smoke (less than 200 when tested IAW ASTM-E662) and flame spread indexes (less than 25 when tested IAW ASTM-E162) are desirable. Both containers must meet performance requirements of both 3 ft. and 7 ft. drop testing, and vibrational (secured and loose cargo) testing at -60??F, ambient, and +145??F temperature extremes in accordance with MIL-STD-1904A while holding contents weighing 10 lbs. and 4 lbs. for containers 1 and 2 respectively. One or more materials may be presented by interested sources, and the two containers need not be made of the same material. Manufacturing and disposal processes need to be environmentally friendly, with ability to dispose in common landfills necessary. All responding sources shall provide a summary of their company's capabilities including organizations, name/address/point of contact identification, a description of facilities/equipment, manufacturing process, inspection capability, personnel, past experience, proven monthly production capacity, possible partnering/teaming arrangements; and whether the company is a small or large business. The market survey is for planning purposes only and shall not be construed as a request for proposal or as an obligation on the part of the government. The Government will utilize the information provided for planning purposes only. All information submitted will be provided at no cost to the government and will be held in a confidential status. The contractor shall provide all information requested in this notification within 30 days of this publication by electronic mail to mescal@pica.army.mil. Reference note 26.
