Description
The Library of Congress intends to purchase through sole source from Carl Zeiss, Hitech Instruments, Inc. (local distributor for Carl Zeiss), 855 Sussex Boulevard, Broomall, PA, 19008, a research-grade stereomicroscope, that will be used for research and routine microscopic examination of large and small Library collection materials and collection housing materials. It is the Library?s understanding that the identified instrument system is the only one commercially available in the U.S. that is capable of meeting the Library?s critical performance requirement for a research-grade stereomicroscope that also meets the following needs: It must be a modular Greenough type to allow for later upgrades and provide high resolution, contrast, and depth of field; its magnification must be 1:7.7 allowing a possible total magnification range of 1.95X to 25X; the optics must use threaded front lenses including a 0.3X to 0.5X lens to provide for a free working distance of 234 mm or greater with an object field of 118 mm or greater; it must have field number 23 eyepieces or greater; the magnification zoom knob must have click stops as well as continuous zoom capability; it must use fiber optic cold-light source illumination with a five-position filter wheel and an RS232 connection for remote computer control; it must have a high resolution camera that is C-mountable with 2/3? chip and peltier cooled connecting via firewire; the camera sensor must use ICX282 interline transfer, pixel size must be 3.4 X 3.4 micron in size, and it must be 12-bit or greater; the system must be able to produce .ZVI files for use with PR&TD?s ImageProTM software for digital imaging and analysis; the microscope must have a 50/50 beam splitter to allow simultaneous photography while viewing through the binocular body with no beam splitter change over; it must come with a stand of base weight 70 pounds or greater, a boom stand, and mount; the vendor must have a local distributor who can provide 24-hour on-site support and service. Any other company that, at the time of application, (1) is either legally incorporated as a U.S. business entity or capable of demonstrating through its business plan its intention to be fully incorporated as a U.S. business, and (2) believes its elemental analysis system can meet all the above equipment performance requirements can apply to the Library for consideration.
