Description
Fishing vessel needed for charter by the National Marine Fisheries Service for research on the effects of changes to trawl sweeps on catch rates of groundfish and the effects of trawls on seafloor features and the ability of certain trawl modifications to reduce bycatch. To accomplish this work the vessel must be equipped with two identical commercial-scale trawl systems which it can tow next to each other at the same time, as well as have experience with this method of fishing. Charter will consist of up to 16 days beginning between August 15 and September 20, 2006, and will begin and end in Dutch Harbor, Alaska. An option for performance in 2007 will be included in the contract. The vessel will be allowed to keep and sell the fish caught during the charter. The value of this catch is expected to provide much or all of the compensation for this charter. Minimum vessel characteristics: Length 150 ft or greater; Minimum main engine continuous horsepower of at least 1000; Able to tow at 3.0 knots or faster; able to maintain speed of at least 16.8 km/hr cruising speed; Sufficient fuel capacity to perform at least 14 days without refueling; Completely rigged and ready to fish; Have at least two fully-separated holding bins, capable of holding at least 12 metric tons of fish each; Area for scientific sampling of catch; Hydraulic crane or other lifting gear; Dry storage areas; Protected work spaces; Potable fresh water supply adequate for vessel and personal use by crew and scientists for duration of charter; Accommodations for crew plus up to 8 members of scientific field party, which may be of mixed gender; Crew shall include a Captain, Mate, Lead Cook, Lead Engineer, and additional personnel need to fish a 24-hour daily schedule.
