Description
The Federal Railroad Administration is evaluating the concept of a locomotive cab simulator facility to conduct human factors research on human performance with various experimental design configurations of the locomotive engineer?s station. The FRA seeks to identify potential sources capable of developing a locomotive cab simulator with sufficient face validity for the locomotive engineer to simulate train operation and handling at the workstation, but be easily reconfigurable to examine different locomotive engineer interface configurations. The purpose of the facility is specifically to examine cost saving design approaches, safety issues, and efficient operations related to the locomotive cab design and to gain the capability to conduct human factors research on the human interface for the locomotive engineer in a digital cab system environment. Emerging operational demands for rail capacity, safety, and security call for new approaches to meeting the railroad industry?s requirements to better communicate with, plan for, and control movement of the locomotive within the railway system. The FRA is interested in industry approaches to resolve these issues through disciplined application of human systems integration and advanced technologies, such as, interactive mockups, dynamic simulation, rapid prototyping tools, and workload assessment models. Requested, is a short concept paper (not to exceed 5 pages) that outlines your company?s approach to providing the FRA the capability to evaluate the integration of new locomotive cab technologies. Potential sources are requested to provide evidence of past performance and evidence of innovation in the application of human factors principles and technology to cost-effective improvements in system design in the areas of advanced display, control, and information integration. THERE ARE NO SOLICITATION DOCUMENTS AT THIS TIME. The intent of this notice is to identify qualified contractors for this potential future acquisition. Interested contractors should submit to the point of contact listed below information regarding their company. The information we are seeking is company name, point of contact with phone number, fax and email, size of the company and whether it is large, small, disadvantaged, etc., relevant work experience with similar projects and relevant design experience with similar projects. Please do not include any proprietary information. Send all information to the Federal Railroad Administration, Office of Research and Development, Mail Stop 20, 1120 Vermont Avenue, Washington, DC. 20590, Attn: Michael Jones.
