- NAICS Code: 541710 The Mid-Continent Ecology Division (MED) of the National Health and Environmental Research Laboratory (NHEERL), Office of Research and Development (ORD) at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Duluth, MN, is seeking two college students or recent graduates to provide services under a contractual agreement to assist in Great Lakes field collections, sample analysis, and data reduction. For the first position, the student contractor must have completed a BS/BA degree in ecology, biology, chemistry, or other physical/environmental science within the past two years. For the second position, the student contractor must have completed a BS/BA degree in ecology, biology, chemistry, or other physical/environmental science within the past two years position, and also have completed at least one year of Graduate school study towards a Masters. For both positions, a student with a background in field studies, with some additional laboratory skills and experience, is preferred. The student must be familiar with basic laboratory and field health and safety practices. The student will work within a multi-disciplinary research team and provide technical support for research projects involving field sampling at sites located across the Great lakes basin and with associated laboratory analyses/data reduction of collected samples. The projects for which the student contractors are needed require measurements of environmental condition, habitat characterization, and biology (fish, plankton, benthic invertebrates) in aquatic ecosystems. Studies will be conducted principally in the coastal zone of the Great Lakes, with themes including: effects of nutrients and habitat alteration, presence of invasive species, and development of ecological assessment methods. The students shall assist in preparation for, and collection of, samples in the field (water, sediment, biota) using standard limnological techniques, as well as electronic/acoustic instruments and in situ continuous sensors. The students shall also assist in laboratory analyses of collected samples, as well as initial data reduction/compilation for the project, including simple statistical summaries. All samples shall be collected and analyzed according to the technical requirements as specified in MED protocols and instructions provided by their mentor. The period of performance will begin approximately May 15, 2006 and end approximately May 14, 2007 with an option for an additional 12 month period of performance through May 14, 2008. The optional period of performance will be exercised at the discretion of the Government. It is anticipated that the contractors will work up to 40 hours per week.
