Description
The US Army and Navy currently use fixed loaded propellant for their 105mm artillery and tank ammunition. The fixed ammunition requires a cartridge case to encase the propellant. These cartridge cases are made by a series of deep draw metal-forming operations. The purpose of this market survey is to determine the feasibility of producing metallic cartridge cases through a process known as ???flow forming???. Previous US Navy process development efforts have demonstrated the viability of using flow form metal-working as an alternative to deep drawing. In an effort to expand the production base of these critical ammunition components, the Army is interested in evaluating the available flow form technologies and facilities for large caliber cartridge case manufacture. ARDEC is seeking companies / facilities within the United States & Canada capable of flow forming large caliber (105mm) cartridge cases. Specifically, we are looking for companies / facilities with experience flow forming alloy steels and capable of handling cases that range from 3 inches to 5 inches in diameter, with overall lengths of up to 34 inches, and wall thickness of less than 0.075 inches. Responses to this survey should also discuss the capabilities of heat treating these thin-walled components while maintaining dimensional stability Interested parties should respond with: ?? Their flow forming capacity o The size component they can handle o Production rate for parts of this size ?? Their experience flow forming items similar to cartridge cases o Right circular cylinders o Internal diameter of 3 to 5 inches o Overall length of 34 inches o Wall thickness of less than 0.075 inches ?? Their available ancillary equipment relevant to cartridge case production o Heat treating equipment o Finish machining equipment o Coating equipment This survey is not a Solicitation, and should not be construed as such. While a Solicitation may be generated regarding flow forming of cartridge cases in the future, no follow on activities are guaranteed. Interested parties should respond by 28 April 2006 to ckallis@pica.army.mil. No costs may be incurred as a result of this Market Survey.
