Description
NAICS Code: 541710 THIS IS A PRE-SOLICITATION SYNOPSIS FOR STUDENT SERVICES TO BE AWARDED ON A CONTRACT BASIS BY THE US ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY. The solicitation number is UUX320 (RFQ-RT-05-00388). The Ecological Exposure Research Division, Cincinnati, Ohio, National Exposure Research Laboratory (NERL), Office of Research and Development (ORD), U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), is seeking one recent graduate (received degree within the last 24 months) with at least an M.S. or equivalent degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics, statistics, physics, chemistry, biology, or a related scientific field to provide services under a contractual agreement to assist in the processing and analysis of metabonomics data in support of the U.S. EPA's Computational Toxicology Initiative. The EERD is involved in the development, evaluation, and implementation of new methods to assess ecosystem condition, to evaluate biotic responses to environmental stressors, and to predict future vulnerability of natural populations and communities. The scale of EERD research ranges from molecular to ecosystem levels of biological organization and addresses immediate as well as emerging environmental threats. Metabonomics involves determining changes in the concentrations of hundreds or thousands of small molecule metabolites present in biological specimens, in response to changing experimental conditions. Metabonomics is used in toxicology to identify molecular indicators of toxicity that appear before gross physiological effects are seen, to determine mechanisms of toxic action, and to classify toxins based on their mechanisms of action. The student contractor will assist in the development of proper study designs, archiving of raw data, preprocessing raw data, data annotation, data analysis, conversion of locally produced data into internationally recognized standard formats, integration with other biochemical data, and mining of the resulting data sets. All necessary instructions and training will be provided by Dr. Greg Toth, who will also serve as the student contractor's mentor. This work is projected to begin November, 2005. It is anticipated that the student contractor will work 20 - 40 hours per week with the majority of the work being Monday through Friday of each week between the hours of 6:30 AM to 4:00 PM. Twenty (20) hours per week is a minimum. The student should indicate in their submission for this position whether they can work full-time or part-time, and if part time, the number of hours per week. The initial contract will be one year, with an option for 12 additional months. The duty location is at the U.S. EPA facility located at: 26 West Martin Luther King Drive, Cincinnati, Ohio 45268. Work will be performed under a variety of settings, including office, laboratory, and field. The work is not particularly hazardous or physically strenuous; field and laboratory health and safety training will be provided.
