Description

This project is for stream restoration using a helicopter to place large wood in a stream channel. Helicopter shall be capable of lifting 8,500 lbs at 2,500 ft. elevation. The project will take place in upper Elk Creek watershed in Bitterlick Creek and Sugarpine Creek subwatersheds. The area can be reached by traveling northwest on the Elk Creek Road from Crater Lake Highway 62 about 12 miles to Forest Roads Nos. 6610 and 6620. The stream segments where large wood will be placed by helicopter are located in T 31S, R 1E WM sections 34, 35 and 36 and T 32 S, R 1E WM sections 1, 2 and 12. The areas where large wood will be stockpiled will be several hundred feet to approximately one mile from the placement locations in Bitterlick Creek and Sugarpine Creek. The length of stream where large wood may be placed is approximately 5 miles and about 75 to 90 pieces of wood will be placed within these 5 miles of stream. Large wood about 40 to 50 feet in length and from 18 inches to 30 inches dbh will be placed in two salmon streams to improve fish habitat conditions. It is anticipated that the large wood pieces will weigh no more than 8,500 pounds. Sites will be flagged and maps and drawings of desired typical large wood configurations will be supplied to the contractor.
