- The National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) intends to award a sole source contract to Spring Valley Laboratories, Inc for a one-year period for Maintenance and Technical Manipulation of Rabbits at NIH, Bethesda, MD. Care of rabbits will be in accordance with current animal welfare regulations and policies. Authority 41 U.S.C. 253(c)(1), as set for in FAR 6.302-1. NIAID has been conducting a long-term breeding and immunization experiment, for several years to study the development of autoimmunity in rabbit models of the human autoimmune disease Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). The colony of genetically defined pedigreed rabbits, animals being used in this experiment, and the inbred rabbits being maintained are important resources for current and future NHGRI rabbit genome sequencing. The stress of moving these animals would seriously negate several years of experimental studies now in progress and would impact on the final results of the study. For this reason, Spring Valley Laboratories, Inc has been identified as the only responsible source for this requirement.
