Description
The U.S. Coast Guard, under the Deepwater program, is developing the Eagle Eye Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) manufactured by Bell Helicopter Textron Incorporated (BHTI). The U.S. Marine Corps is also planning on procuring eight production aircraft to under the VUAV program. The Eagle Eye is currently still in the development stage, with its first flight scheduled for the Spring of 2005. The Joint Aircraft Survivability Program Office (JASPO) would like to conduct a preliminary infrared (IR) assessment of the Eagle Eye prototype. This assessment will enable DoD and DHS to characterize the IR signature and susceptibility of a tactical tilt-rotor class UAV. Currently, there are no tilt-rotor class UAVs in the inventory, and there is no historical data or characterization of the susceptibility of this type of platform to IR threats. Tactical UAVs are frequently required to operate in environments where there are IR threats and sensors, either from man-portable air defense systems (MANPADS), night vision equipment, or ships and aircraft equipped with Infrared Search and Track (IRST) sensors. These UAVs will operate under war and peacetime conditions, conducting Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance for military forces, for homeland defense, and for counter-drug operations. This baseline assessment will facilitate development of concepts of operations and provide a technical basis for survivability enhancements to the platform. The Government intends to establish this Sole Source Firm Fixed Price award with Bell Helicopter Textron Inc.
