Description
Provide training for nine (9) individuals in the state of Wyoming. This training is designed to provide potential or current first line wildland fire supervisors the tools to build and lead highly functional crews. The leadership curriculum is based on genuine leadership opportunities, which take place in the field. Formal classes on leadership theory and communication will be taught, just as they would be in a traditional class setting. Trainees will hike cross-country from a start to finish point while investigating and exploring group dynamics and leadership values and principles. There will be significant technical, navigation, and environmental challenges as participant leaders decide the best approach to meet group goals. Instructors will play evolving roles as participants' knowledge, experience and abilities increase during this self-contained expedition. The participant group will take on increasing levels of personal and team responsibility for the technical, navigational and interpersonal aspects of the traveling course. Instructors will provide structured briefing, debriefing, feedback, technical expertise, safety management, evaluation, classes and structure for participant leadership and followership opportunities. Student participation in this training experience must meet the National Wildland Fire Coordination Group (NWCG) requirements for Fireline Leadership. The training will also be used as an NWCG certification. Projected Leadership Outcomes: Each participant is expected to develop the following practices, applying them to the immediate tasks on the expedition and discussing their continued application within their fire crews: "Develop the ability of individuals to operate successfully in a prolonged stressful environment, "Sensitize crew persons to inter-personal issues and how to deal with them (coping mechanisms), "Build tools for preventing, detecting, and correcting operational errors, "Create self-awareness in each individual to prepare them to interact under stress and possible conflict, "Hone briefing and communication skills "Encourage individuals to become good members of expeditions (follower-ship), "Develop leadership skills within each crew member, "Discuss and use situation-dependent decision making models, "Demonstrate mastery of the wildland fire leadership values and principles. Progress toward these outcomes will be monitored through individual verbal and written evaluation(s). Training Dates and Length: For this fireline leadership program, we are prepared to conduct a 6-day field expedition May timeframe.
