NAICS Code: 541710 THIS IS A PRE-SOLICITATION SYNOPSIS FOR STUDENT LABORATORY SERVICES TO BE HIRED ON A CONTRACT BASIS BY THE US ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY. The solicitation number is U5RD14 (RFQ-RT-05-00070). The Microbiological & Chemical Exposure Assessment Research Division (MCEARD), Cincinnati, OH, of the National Exposure Research Laboratory, Office of Research and Development, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, is seeking a to place a contract/purchase order with a student (herein referred to as "contractor") or recent graduate (received degree within the last 24 months) with a B.S. or equivalent degree in Biology, or a related sub-discipline such as Genetics, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Environmental Sciences or Microbiology, plus one year of graduate school to provide services under a contractual agreement in support of research projects focusing on detection of bacterial fecal indicators in surface waters. The preferred student will possess skills/experience in specific molecular biology laboratory work, such as DNA extraction and PCR chemistry and also general laboratory practices, including health and safety. The Recreational Beach Waters Research Group of the Microbial Exposure Research Branch, MERB, is responsible for developing and evaluating rapid molecular based methods for the quantitative detection of bacterial fecal indicators in surface waters. These methods are primarily in support of the U.S. EPA National Epidemiological and Environmental Assesssment (NEEAR) Water Study that has been initiated to meet the requirements of the Clean Water Action Plan, the Beach Action Plan, and the Beach Act of 2000. The contractor will assist the mentor in performing tasks involved with molecular genetic data collection and organization. Tasks may include, but are not limited to: (1) water sample collection and organization; (2) DNA extractions; (3) PCR amplification and purification; (4) PCR amplicon characterization and sequencing; (5) analysis of genotype and DNA sequence data; (5) membrane filtration and bacterial culture analysis; and (6) other general laboratory and field duties necessary to carry out research (i.e., buffer and sample preparation, routine equipment maintenance, record-keeping of these activities in lab notebooks and electronic formats). All necessary instructions and training will be provided by Dr. Richard Haugland, who will also serve as the student mentor. This work is expected to begin during January 2005 and it is expected that the student contractor will work approximately 20 per week, normally on Mondays through Fridays between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The initial contract will be one year with the potential for a 12 month extension. The location is Microbial & Chemical Exposure Assessment Research Division, NERL, 26 W. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Cincinnati, OH 45268. Work will be performed under a variety of settings including office, laboratory, and field. The work is not particularly hazardous or physically strenuous; field and laboratory health and safety training will be provided.
