- Reproduction U. S. Model 1841 Artillery Limber with Ammunition Chest for 6 Pound Gun The Limber and ammunition chest shall conform in all respects with specifications listed in the 1861 Ordance manual for the use of the Officers of the United states Army (see attachment), unless otherwise stated in the following Scope of Work. The limber shall be constructed of white oak (Quercus albus)lumber with the exception of hickory for the pole prop. (All wood shall be well seasoned with a moisture content of no more than 15% and the wood shall be freee of rot, mold, and insect infestation, etc. All wood will be straight grained and free of knots, checks and voids. The ammunition chest will be made of black walnut (Juglans nigra) for the ends, sides, principle partition and cover-frame. White oak wil lbe used for the bottom and white poplar (Lirodendron tulipifera) for the panel for the cover, cover-lining partitions and tray. All wood and metal surfaces shall be sanded smooth and be free of burrs, silvers, splinters and other imperfections. No maker's manufacturer's or vendor's stamps, markings or medallions shall be placed or affixed on the limber carraige or ammunition chest. The contractor shall apply to all wood parts one coat of oil based priming paint prior to assembly and two finish coats of oil based dark olive drab paint (semi-gloss) to all exterior wood surfaces. All iron parts (with the exception of the tires) shall be painted with one coat of rust-resistant oil-based primer paint and painted with two coats of black color oil based paint on all surfaces prior to assembly. The tires will be primed and painted after mountin.
