Description

This synopsis serves as notice of intent to negotiate a sole source simplified acquisition with the University of Washington, School of Medicine, Department of Microbiology for characterizations of pathogens and their adherence factors to better understand the effects on mammalian hosts. The study includes research on Vibrio parahaemolyticus and its role as an etiologic agent of gastroenteritis in humans as it relates to consumption of raw shellfish. The Government believes that only the UW, School of Medicine, Dept. of Microbiology can perform this research because of their principal investigator?s national reputation, as evidenced by over 60 publications in high impact journals, and experience in characterization of structure-function and expression of bacterial structures that mediate adherence and colonization to host epithelial cells. UW researchers has also carried out and published numerous studies on the contribution of specific bacterial surface factors to virulence using a variety of available animal models, studies and experience which is crucial for successful completion of the study aimed at understanding the molecular basis of deleterious effects of pathogens on mammalian hosts as a function of exposure to shellfish. All responsible sources may submit a quotation, which shall be considered.
