Description
PROVIDE BIOLOGICAL SAMPLE PROCESSING AND DATA ENTRY SERVICES FOR THE NATIONAL MARINE FISHERIES SERVICE, AUKE BAY LABORATORY, MARINE SALMON INTERACTIONS PROGRAM (MSIP) IN JUNEAU, AK. PERIOD OF PERFORMANCE WILL BE FOR ONE YEAR, WITH ONE ADDITIONAL OPTION YEAR. THE MSIP CONDUCTS RESEARCH ON THE DISTRIBUTION, MIGRATION, TROPHIC ECOLOGY, GROWTH, AND CONDITION OF SALMON AT LOCATIONS IN THE INSIDE AND COASTAL WATERS OF NORTHERN SOUTHEASTERN ALASKA. AS PART OF THE SECM PROJECT IN 2004, BIOLOGISTS INITIATED A COOPERATIVE PROJECT WITH ADFG, UAF AND DIPAC IN TAKU INLET TO INVESTIGATE INTERACTIONS OF HATCHERY AND WILD CHUM SALMON DURING WILD SALMON OUTMIGRATION AND HATCHERY SALMON RELEASES DURING SPRING. THIS WORK INCLUDES USING OTOLITH THERMAL MARKS TO IDENTIFY STOCK OF ORIGIN OF SALMON COLLECTED AT SEA. THIS RESEARCH COMPLEMENTS LONG-TERM MONITORING RESEARCH ON OLDER JUVENILE SALMON CONDUCTED BY SECM TO THE WEST OF TAKU INLET IN THE VICINITY OF ICY STRAIT AND ICY POINT IN THE SUMMER MONTHS. THIS PROJECT ALSO INCLUDES USING SALMON BIOLOGICAL DATA (E.G., LENGTH, WEIGHT, DIET, AND ENERGY CONTENT) FOR GROWTH, FOOD HABITS, CONDITION, AND ENERGETIC ANALYSES, AND ZOOPLANKTON DATA (E.G., BIOMASS, ABUNDANCE, AND TAXONOMIC COMPOSITION) FOR ANALYSES OF SALMON PREY FIELDS. THE CONTRACTORWILL PERFORM LABORATORY SAMPLE PROCESSING AND DATA ENTRY RELATED TO THE SECM PROJECT AND ITS TAKU INLET STUDY COMPONENT. CONTRACTOR MUST POSSESS MINIMUM UPPER DIVISION STANDING IN A BS PROGRAM, FAMILIARITY WITH BINOCULAR MICROSCOPES AND TAXONOMIC IDENTIFICATION OF FISH AND INVERTEBRATES, AND EXPERIENCE USING MICROSOFT EXCEL AND ACCESS. SOME TRAINING WILL BE PROVIDED, PARTICULARLY IN LABORATORY PROCEDURES FOR CALIROMETRY AND IDENTIFICATION OF PREY TAXA. IT IS ANTICIPATED THAT AWARD WILL BE MADE TO CONTRACTOR IN JUNEAU, ALASKA OR LOCAL COMMUTING AREA. THIS IS A SIMPLIFIED ACQUISITION WITH AN ESTIMATED VALUE OF LESS THAN $100,000.
