- NAICS Code: 541710 The Western Ecology Division (WED) of the National Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory (NHEERL), Office of Research and Development (ORD) at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is seeking a college student (undergraduate or graduate) to provide services under a contractual agreement to assist with western bluebird studies. Contractors must be at least 18 years of age, with 2 years of experience in biology, ecology, environmental science, fisheries and wildlife, zoology or related field. The student contractor will assist in monitoring survival, reproduction, and behavior of western bluebirds, violet green swallows, and tree swallows. The student contractor will assist in checking nest boxes, measuring nestlings, identifying individuals using color bands, tracking forage behavior, and assessing habitat types. All necessary instructions and training will be provided by Dr. Laura Nagy, who will also serve as the student mentor. The initial contract period will be for 12 months (starting on or about June 17, 2004 - June 16, 2005) with an option for an additional 12 month period (June 17, 2005 - June 16, 2006 - based on the commencement date of the original contract). Exercising the optional 12 month period will be at the discretion of the Government. It is anticipated that the student will work 20 hours per week with the majority of the work being Monday through Friday of each week. However, the student may be asked to work 40 or more hours per week during the field season (May - September). The duty location is Western Ecology Division, 200 SW 35th St Corvallis, OR 97333. Work will be performed under a variety of settings including office, library, and field. The work requires using binoculars, spotting scopes, mild hiking and carrying a moderate amount of equipment. Field safety training will be provided. The solicitation documents will be posted on or around May 21, 2004 at the EPA's website http://www.epa.gov/oam/rtp_cmd.
