Description
The Bureau is interested in obtaining, testing, and evaluating technologies or materials with potential application for coating U.S. currency to enhance longevity and durability in circulation. Coating materials or processes submitted must be compatible with all materials currently used to produce U.S. currency; i.e. currency paper, offset, intaglio and COPE inks, and security features. Specifications for these materials are available upon request. In addition, the coating must not significantly alter the appearance or distinctive feel of currency paper, as these characteristics are part of a longstanding tradition that the public has come to trust and associate with U.S. currency. The prospective materials and processes used to apply them may be considered for any stage of currency production?from coatings applied to the paper substrate before any printing to coatings applied after all printing has been completed. Benefits that might be expected to result from the coatings include, but are not limited to, soiling resistance, moisture resistance, ink adhesion, enhanced print quality, ink set-off resistance (when sheets are stacked during production), and improvements in mechanical properties of the notes such as folding endurance and tear strength. Other factors to be considered in the evaluation of coatings and/or coating processes will be compatibility with production flow, environmental acceptability, and cost. Other appropriate representatives from the the Department of Treasury and/or Federal Reserve Bank may also review technologies or materials submitted to the Bureau. The Bureau may also submit offered technologies to other technical experts under government contracts for their evaluation. For initial screening purposes, interested parties are requested to submit preliminary samples and/or brief technical descriptions (1-2 paragraphs) plus cost estimates for the purchase of larger test quantities to the BEP, Office of Procurement, Attn: Cindy Duncan, 14th & C Streets, S.W., Washington, D.C. 20228. Larger quantities of samples may be procured through simplified acquisition (small purchase) for further evaluation. Previously submitted materials or technologies need not resubmit. If you have any questions please contact Cindy Duncan on (202) 874-2539 or e-mail cynthia.duncan@bep.treas.gov.
