- Description
- Engineers at the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL) have developed a novel method for generating and storing electrical power in a borehole. The new process will eliminate the need for direct wiring or cables as power sources down hole. The device utilizes piezoelectric components to convert mechanical energy created by the vibrations and flexing associated with drilling into useable electric power. The generated power would be stored in a capacitor or battery. The device will continue to generate electricity as long as drill components are flexed, even in very small amounts. The INEEL is soliciting a joint collaboration with manufacturers of Downhole Seismic Equipment or Drill String Equipment to provide funding and in-kind support to develop full-scale models and conduct a field test. A successful development project will result in licensing opportunities. Point of contact: Phillip B.
