- Description
- The NNSA Service Center in Oakland intends to issue a change order to increase the value of the current contract with additional work scope tasks. NNSA awarded Contract No. DE-AC03-99EE50565 to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on a sole source basis to perform research and devleopment in the area of reduction of emission from diesel engines and improved fuel efficiencies. The Plasma Fusion Center of MIT is working on a patented compact plasma reformer (Plasmatron) for transportation application. MIT will develop the reformer and optimize its performance with emphasis on increasing the throughput of hydrogen and the use of biofuels. The Plasma Fusion Center of MIT is in a unique position to perform the research and development necessary to bring the Plasmatron technology to maturity. The device was developed at MIT, evolving from R&D on fusion reactors. MIT was in the forefront of this research. Furthermore, MIT holds several patents on the Plasmatron and has all of the unique expertises in plasma physics, hydrocarbon chemistry, diesel engines, material science, and electrical engineering required to product a durable, low-cost reformer.
