Description
The National Cancer Institute (NCI), Occupational Epidemiology Branch (OEB), plans to enter into a sole source contract with the University of Iowa, Department of Epidemiology, College of Public Health, Iowa City, IA 52242 for the collection of additional urine samples from corn farmers to enable detailed pesticide exposure assessment within the corn farming study and collect additional blood samples from enrolled controls to study temporal trends in relevant biomarkers among non-exposed subjects. OEB additional needs for collection of these samples are based on experiences/results from the previous years. In comparison to general population, farmers have an increased risk of non Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) and certain other hematopoeitic cancers (i.e., multiple myelomas, leukemia). Factors that contribute to this excess risk have not been discerned, while several epidemiologic studies have observed an increased risk for NHL among farmers who are exposed to certain pesticides (i.e., pheoxyacetic acids, organophosphates, organchlorines, and triazines), these studies have not been conclusive; nor has a clear mechanistic association between farming pesticide exposure and subsequent development of cancer been identified. Given that immunocompromised individuals are at increased risk for NHL, it has been hypothesized that altered immune function may be an indicator of increased potential for the development of immunologically based diseases such as NHL. It is critical to the research of the OEB for a continuation of the Corn farming study, which is a sub-study of the Agricultural Health Study (AHS) (Iowa contract #NO1-CP-81119). The University of Iowa, Department of Epidemiology is the only source known to the Government that can provide this service without changing existing variables. However, if any interested party believes it can meet the above requirements, without changing variables, it may submit a statement of capability. The capability statement and any other furnished information must be in writing and must contain material in sufficient detail to allow NCI to determine if the party can fully meet the requirements herein. Capability statements must be received in the contracting office no later than 1:30 P.M. EDT on June 20, 2003. If you have any questions, please contact Cynthia Brown, Purchasing Agent, (301) 402-4509. A determination by the Government not to compete this proposed requirement based on respones to this notice is solely within the discretion of the Goverment. Information received will be considered solely for the purpose of determining whether to conduct a competitive procurement. No collect calls will be accepeted. The NAICS Code 621511.
