Description
LAWRENCE LIVERMORE NATIONAL LABORATORY SEEKS LICENSEES TO COMMERCIALIZE NANOMATERIALS TECHNOLOGY Announcement: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), operated by the University of California under contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), is seeking one or more industrial partners to commercialize an application of LLNL's proprietary nanomaterials technology (NMT). The technology is used to manufacture ceramic components for various applications (cutting tools, etc.). The material fabrication begins with inexpensive commercially available starting materials that are converted into nanopowders via a proprietary process developed within the Chemistry and Materials Science Department at LLNL. The process, which has been developed to the pound quantity production scale, employs simple laboratory equipment and low energy consumption. Typical nano-powders formed in this process include Al2O3, MgO, ZrO2, Y2O3, ceramic composites. The ceramic composites include ultra-fine mixtures of oxides, carbides, nitrides. Preliminary test results indicate that the process allows us to tailor nanostructure to suit special application needs such as low or high densities, fine or coarse agglomerate structures, and the distributed or continuous nature of multiphase structures. Ceramic components (3"diameter by 1/4" thick disks) and four point bend tests bars from such disks have shown high strength and toughness to date. Note: THIS IS NOT A PROCUREMENT. Companies interested in developing and commercializing LLNL's nanomaterials technology should provide a written statement of interest, which includes the following: 1. Company Name and address. 2. The name, address, and telephone number of a point of contact. 3. A description of corporate expertise and facilities relevant to commercializing this technology. Written responses should be directed to: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Industrial Partnerships and Commercialization P.O. Box 808, L-795 Livermore, CA 94551-0808 Attention: FBO000017-03 Please provide your written statement within thirty (30) days from the date this announcement is published to ensure consideration of your interest in commercializing LLNL's nanomaterials technology.
